Information of Cusco
Location:
The city of Cusco is located in South America, in the southeast part of the Andes of Peru, at 13° 30 south latittude and at 72° 00 longitude Greenwich. Cusco is the actual capital of the province and department of Cusco. ALTITUDE: 3360 meters (11.000 feet) above the sea level.
Weather: There are two specific times of the year: the rainy season from November to March and the dry Season from April to October
Territory:
Cusco's territory has an extension of 76,225 K. (37000 miles aprox.).
Temperature: In Cusco the anual temperature goes from 11°C
to 13°C (60 F approximately) sometimes 20°C(75 F) on a sunny day.
Language:
The official languages of Peru are: Spanish which is used by 73% of the population and Quechua or Runasimi which is spoken by 24% of Peruvians. Some specialists recognise specific variations of quechua in the national territory : Uyhuash, which is quite popular in the central part of Peru and Humpuy, spoken by the rest of the country. Most of the quechua-speakers are bilingual and have spanish as their second language. The same thing occurs with the Aymaras, whose language strongly spans over the Altiplano. There are also over 55 amazonian dialects spoken by tribes in the peruvian jungle such as: Ashaninka, Aguaruna and Machiguenga.
Religion:
The official religion is Roman Catholic. Over 80% of the population practice catholicism with deep devotion, however, there is a freedom to practice devotion to Pachamama (mother earth). Many of the people from the Andes and the Amazonia practice catholicism mixed with some old traditions such as devotion to Pachamama (mother earth) and nature.
Currency:
The Official currency of Peru is the nuevo sol l and its symbol is S/. It is divided into 100 centimos (cents): with coins valued at S/.5 , S/.2 , S/.1,and 50, 20, 10 centimoor centimes pieces, although the latter is being phased out as it is virtually worthless. Notes in circulation are S/. 200 , S/.100 , S/.50, S/.20 and S/.10 bills. The economy of Peru goes side by side with the american dollar, that's why many businesses are compensated with the use of both currencies.
Exchange
Rates: The easiest foreign currency to exchange is the american dollar. It is very common in the tourism business for most of the entrance fees, tickets and fares to be charged in american dollars. There are plenty of exchange offices in towns and you can also exchange your money with the cambistas people on the street who are usually walking up and down Sol Av. Most of the hotels, restaurants and shops accept credit cards, however, they charge you a percentage and their exchange rate is very low which makes you lose a fair bit of money. The exchange rate varies marginally from day to day.
Travellers
Checks: You can bring then, however, the exchange rates are less than
what they are for cash.
Credit
Cards: The most popular and accepted credit
cards are:
Visa, Dinners, Mastercard and American Express.
However the use of these is not very popular in some provinces of Peru.
Banks:
Generally the banks are open to the public from 09:00
until 18:00 from monday to friday and saturdays
only until mid day , however in some other cities like
Cusco some banks close at mid day or lunch time and then
reopen at 3 pm. they start again.
Time:
Peruvian time is located five hours after the GMT (Greenwich
Mean time) and it's similar to the EST (Eastern Standart Time)
time in the U. S. A..
